Any time there's meaningful mosquito exposure risk — travel to areas with dengue, malaria, Zika, or West Nile virus activity, evening outdoor time in high-mosquito areas, or during a local outbreak — the CDC recommends an EPA-registered repellent as the effective, evidence-based choice.

Since these patches don't touch the skin directly, they avoid some of the skin-sensitivity concerns of topical repellents, but "safe" isn't the same as "effective" — for real disease-risk situations (travel to affected regions, outbreaks), parents should use an EPA-registered repellent appropriate for the child's age rather than relying on a patch alone.

For areas with mosquito-borne disease risk, the CDC recommends EPA-registered active ingredients (DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, IR3535) as proven effective options. Citronella and geraniol may offer some mild repellent effect for casual outdoor use, but aren't considered equivalent protection where disease risk is a real concern.

The CDC and EPA have evaluated wearable repellent devices like clip-ons and patches and found limited evidence that they meaningfully reduce mosquito bites compared to EPA-registered topical repellents (like DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus) applied directly to skin. Patches may offer some mild deterrent effect in low-mosquito-density settings, but shouldn't be relied on as primary protection in areas with higher mosquito activity.

EPA-registered repellents have been tested and proven effective at reducing mosquito bites under FIFRA regulations, while patches and other non-skin-contact wearable devices using essential oils are not EPA-registered and haven't demonstrated the same level of proven effectiveness in controlled studies.
